16,902 Mercedes-Benz coupes and convertibles were built 1960-1965 in Germany, the vendor acquiring this 220DSEbc in March 1989 by when the fixed head had covered approximately 101,000 miles. After about six months, with mileage at 102,163, it was subjected to a ground-up rebuild. Woodwork and leather was refurbished fairly quickly, though body refurbishment took longer.
For following a period of storage in a heated and dehumidified garage, the restoration did not commence in earnest until 2001 with some parts sourced from the Stuttgart manufacturer. All corroded metal was cut out and new panels welded in, all voids being injected with wax oil as the rebuild was completed and a photographic record made. The car was repainted in green, the original colour, and the interior trim and wood installed and chromework fitted.
A replacement 2195cc six-cylinder engine of the correct type was purchased from Roger Edwards Motors, one of the Technical Advisors to the marque clubs. Clutch and brake parts were renewed and new exhaust system and tyres fitted, while all hoses and rubber items were renewed.
With 102,858 miles on the clock, the car was successfully MOT tested 28 January 2002, the next MOT passed at 103,305 miles on 29 April 2003 and the current certificate issued at 104,038 miles on 12 May 2004. When entered, the mileage had only risen to 104,038, a believed to be genuine total for the car from new and only about 1400 miles since the restoration.
