The launch of the Jaguar XJ6 / Daimler Sovereign in 1968 redefined expectations in the luxury car sector. The new model effectively 'moved the goalposts' setting new standards for comfort, handling and refinement. A waiting list was quick to form and enthusiasm remained strong upon the introduction of the Series II cars in 1973. The standard or long wheelbase saloon models were joined later that same year by a striking new variant, an elegant pillarless coupe. Available with either the 4.2 litre straight six XK unit or the fabulous 5.3 litre V12, this handsome design retained the saloon's all-round independent coil and wishbone suspension, disc brakes and power steering. Performance was predictably strong with both variants reputedly able to exceed 120mph.
Finished in red with fawn leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "fair" (electrical equipment, interior trim, wheels / tyres) or "good" (4.2 litre engine, three-speed automatic gearbox, chassis, bodywork, paintwork) condition. In the current ownership since 1986, the Daimler was off the road from 1988 to 2000 during which time it was reportedly treated to some restoration work including having "all rusty parts replaced with new ones". Said to have "only done about 3,000 miles" since being given an engine and gearbox overhaul in 2001, the following year saw it benefit from a LPG conversion. Utilising twin tanks (one of which relegated the spare wheel to the main boot area) this alternative fuel system is reputed to have "a range of 200 miles". Believed but not warranted to have covered 82,660 miles from new, the Coupe is currently suffering from a faulty fuel gauge. A handsome yet comparatively practical classic, it is offered for sale with engine overhaul invoice, MOT certificate valid until June 6th 2006 and road tax until September.
