Introduced during 1982 the XZ550 was intended to form part of Yamaha's assault on Honda's market share. The new machine featured a liquid cooled, 550cc, narrow angle, double overhead cam vee twin engine with four valves per head. The transmission contained five speeds and a shaft final drive with the power unit being hung from a steel frame which used Yamaha's well proven "cantilever" rear suspension. Unfortunately, the new model was introduced to the market with some flaws, the machines quick steering front end did not endear it all and was compounded by front forks that were softly damped, however, it was the machines carburation that caused the greatest concern. The models downdraught carburettors produced a stutter in the power delivery which riders found un-nerving and although the problem was addressed for the following season, the machines reputation had been irrevocably damaged, with riders opting for well proven machines such as Yamaha's XJ550 instead.
The example offered has had only one owner from new and is offered in excellent condition with a German registration document.
