Lot details Registration No: SJA195H Chassis No: 158472662 Mot Expiry: May 2007
Introduced in summer 1949, the Karmann built Volkswagen Beetle convertible remained in production until 10th January 1980. An attractive four-seater design, it shared the same torsion-bar sprung platform chassis as its saloon car sibling (while, the provision of a properly insulated hood made it surprising usable in winter). Air-cooled, its various rear-mounted flat-four engines grew in size until the arrival of a 1584cc unit in 1970. Credited with some 50bhp and 78lbft, it reputedly endowed the Beetle with an 80mph plus top speed.
Finished in white with black cloth upholstery (piped in red), this particular right-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its 1584cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Purchased from our December 2000 Buxton auction, 'SJA 195H' has been in the current ownership ever since. Said to have covered just 500 miles during the intervening six years, it was apparently treated to a new set of tyres in June 2004. Reportedly garaged when not in use, it sports colour-coded bumpers / door mirrors, front-mounted spotlights and a black hood bag. First registered by Stockport County Borough Council (or so its number plate would imply), this pampered Beetle Convertible is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until May 21st 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
