Lot details Registration No: PFF 490 Chassis No: 6019206 Mot Expiry: Sept 2005
The chassis, R Drewitt constructed body and running gear of this successful Riley special is not only claimed to be a copy of the 1936 Riley factory racing Sprite with which Mike Hawthorn gained his first victory in Ulster in 1950, but is also said to be fifty per cent more powerful than the original works car.
1932 Riley 9 Plus Ultra chassis number 6019206 has been shortened to 7ft 9ins and underslung at the rear. A 12/4 1496cc four-cylinder engine has been race prepared throughout with raised compression, and crank, cams, rods, valves and rocker gear all heavily modified to produce 87/90bhp at the rear wheels and oil pressure reading 60 when hot. The gearbox is a manual four-speed 295 with open propshaft and A type radius rods to the rear of the chassis. Brakes are hydraulic and wings and lights easily detach for racing.
Since the `Drewitt Riley' hit the circuits in 1985, it has been placed thirty-five times, with firsts at Avon Park, Colerne, Donington, Loton, Oulton, North Weald (twice) and Silverstone (four times). For being fastest Riley during the season, it is twice winner of the Coventry Cup and has raced at the Nurburgring and Hockenheim. As recently as the July Shelsley Walsh hill climb, an ascent in 44.15 seconds won the class. Apart from very competitive, and having VSCC blue and buff competition forms, PFF 490 is also
road legal with twelve months MOT and tax.
