This 1987 Peugeot 205 GTi was rebuilt as a race car and driven by Andrew Varey in the 750 MC's Hot Hatch Championship, in which it was runner-up in 2002 and, following a change of ownership to John Hammersley, was again runner up in his hands in 2003. The FWD hatch, which has clocked up numerous wins at UK circuits and lap records at Donington, Oulton Park and Brands Hatch, also featured in the March 2002 issue of Cars and Car Conversions.
The Varey-prepped 1.6-litre, allegedly producing 179bhp, is reportedly in good order as is the Peugeot Sport close-ratio gearbox. The Quantum/Leda suspension is fully adjustable and there is ingenious coil-over rear suspension, which won 750MC's Colin Chapman Award for Engineering Excellence. The shell with fair paintwork in red and blue has been lightened to 720kg in race trim.
Also included are a V5, making this a potential rally project, and a `spares package' consisting of two race engines, standard gearbox, suspension, brakes, wheels and panels, which can be collected from Stafford by the successful bidder. For still competitive and eligible for several series, the 205 is being auctioned entirely without reserve.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
