1936 Talbot BI 105 Aero Special

Lot details
Registration No: CVU 205
Chassis No: 4060
Mot Expiry: May 2013

Unveiled at the October 1935 London Motor Show, the BI 105 was arguably the last 105 variant to remain true to designer Georges Roesch's engineering principles. Notably rigid and low-slung, the newcomer's chassis was reinforced by the use of a massive tubular cruciform brace and additional perforated channel sections to the inner face of its main side members. Equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-spring suspension, Luvax adjustable dampers and large-diameter drum brakes, the BI 105 was powered by a free-revving 3-litre straight-six engine allied to Wilson pre-selector transmission. A rival to models from Alvis, Bentley and Lagonda, just 97 BI 105s are thought to have been made.

First registered on December 1st 1936, chassis 4060 was supplied new to aircraft repair company, David Rosenfield Ltd of Barton, near Manchester. Initially bodied as a Sports Saloon and later belonging to Ronald Stoddart of High Beutham, Lancashire, the Talbot 105 was rescued from barn storage by Mike Wood and Peter Plunket during 1995. Decidedly tired and forlorn, 'CVU 205' then passed to restorer Bill Barrott who was commissioned by William Balfour to transform it into a two-door fastback, or Aero Coupe. Numerous mechanical modifications and upgrades were also carried out in order to make chassis 4060 into a notable Grand Tourer - these included uprating its original engine with a trio of SU carburettors. Owned by renowned enthusiast Paul Wignall back in 2001 the 105 was acquired by its current keeper during 2006. Commenting that the pre-selector equipped two-seater is "relaxing to drive" and "easily capable of motorway speeds", he rates its engine, bodywork, paintwork and electrical equipment as all "excellent". Finished in Silver over Midnight Blue with Blue leather upholstery, this stunning Post Vintage Thoroughbred is worthy of close inspection.
