To counter buyer fears of the Jaguar Mk1's back end being too nervous, particularly when the larger XK 120 motor powered version had to cope with corners in the wet, the MK2 hit the showrooms. There had been calls, too, for improvements to braking and all-round visibility. The Mk2 overcame all such criticisms with disc brakes, thinner screen and door pillars, greater glass area and even more potent 3781cc engine option for the Mk2 3.8.
This 1965-manufactured Mk2 3.8, a genuine and always righthand drive car on wires, has spent most of its life in the mainly dry climate of South Africa. In 2003, when the sports saloon was the subject of a comprehensive restoration, the four-door bodyshell was found to be sound. The panels have been treated to a bare metal repaint in opalescent silver grey and a full mechanical rebuild undertaken which included refurbishment of what is claimed still to be the original engine. The red leather interior has been refurbished with MCT trim kit and woodwork re-finished by Classic Veneer. Most usefully, a conversion to manual overdrive transmission has been made, employing original Jaguar components. Since all this work, we understand that the mileage has only been increased by some 50 miles.
The vendor tells us that, by auction day, the car should have been UK registered as well as MOT tested for a full twelve months. It does come with a Heritage certificate which authenticates dating and manufacturing details.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
