Lot details Registration No: VV 1642 Chassis No: 29066 Mot Expiry: July 2005
Offered here is a 1931 Coventry-built Humber, the Snipe fitted with four-door open bodywork made by the Cricklewood craftsmen of coachbuilders Thrupp & Maberly, who were founded as carriage makers by Joseph Thrupp in 1760 and joined forces with George Maberly from 1858. Humber themselves had acquired neighbours Hillman in 1928 and, in turn, were acquired by the Rootes Group in 1932.
We understand that the right-hand drive tourer with hood has been retrimmed in the recent past and a certain amount of work done to the 3445cc capacity engine including the renewal of liners, valves, flywheel and radiator core; as a result of this rebuild, the six-cylinder motor is reportedly in good order today. Apparently, the four-speed manual gearbox is working well, too, whilst the electrical equipment is rated as fair.
VV 1642 is still presented in the original colours of maroon over black, the paintwork described by the owner as being in good condition as is the chassis, with the ambla and leather trim, again in maroon, also said to be excellent. He says the wire wheels, an optional extra on all Humber models from 1929, are in good condition. Previous owners known to him are Mike Davies and Nigel Oakley.
The latest MOT test certificate and tax disc, historic vehicle eligible and therefore still free of charge, are both valid until July. With just three such T&M bodied Snipe tourers known to the Humber Register, this is therefore a very rare and, as we are sure you will agree, a rather charming 1930's automobile.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
