Mercedes-Benz introduced their fourth generation SL, the imposing R129-series in October 1989. A technical tour de force, its balletic electric roof operation still impresses today. Now out of production, the R129 is destined to go the way of its illustrious W198, W121, W113 and R107 forebears and become a true classic. At launch, its advanced specification included all-round independent suspension, ABS brakes, power-assisted steering, remote central locking, electric front seats, door mirrors and windows. Despite having automatic transmission as standard, the R129 was the choice of many Formula One drivers during the early nineties such was its tenacious grip and fine poise. The more powerful of the two six-cylinder engines initially available, the 2962cc DOHC 24-valve M104 unit boasted Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection, cylinder specific ignition timing, variable valve timing and under-piston cooling jets. Credited with developing some 231bhp and 201lbft of torque, it reputedly enabled the 300 SL-24 to sprint from 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds and reach 137mph.
Finished in red with beige leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent overall" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Reportedly "delivered to the Isle of Man in February 1992", 'J138 LCK' is understood to have "remained there until entering the current lady ownership via a dealer during July 2003". Stated to have had only two private keepers and to have covered just 30,000 miles from new (a figure apparently substantiated by thirteen stamps in the accompanying service book the last of which was at 26,884 miles), the two-seater rides on alloy wheels and sports a factory hardtop roof. An attractive year-round proposition, this low mileage 300 SL-24 is offered for sale with service book, sundry receipts, old MOTs, two keys (plus original presentation box) and MOT certificate valid until June 2009.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
