Lot details Registration No: YV 2703 Chassis No: 5T59630 Mot Expiry: April 2008
Introduced in late 1921, the Austin 12 (later known as the 'Heavy 12/4') became a legend within its own production lifetime. In many ways a scaled-down version of the existing 20/4 model, it was based around a sturdy ladder-frame chassis equipped with drum brakes and all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension. Powered by a 1661cc sidevalve four-cylinder engine, the newcomer could be had with a variety of open or closed body styles and even saw service in the carriage trade. Updated in 1927, the 12 gained a longer-stroke 1861cc powerplant, higher scuttle and wider track. Renowned for its durability and dependability, the Austin has long held a special place in Vintage car circles.
Finished in green over black with grey / black upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "OK" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. While, he goes on to say that 'YV 2703' was "originally bodied by an outside (non-Austin) coachbuilder, and was at some stage converted into a truck and subsequently fitted with its present body. The doors appear to be original but most of the rest of the body dates, I believe, from the 1980s. The front seats are of vintage Austin manufacture. The engine and various other parts of the car were overhauled by Arthur Archer of Dunmow in the early 1980s (copy bills available)". Riding on artillery wheels but reportedly suffering from a charging system fault, this charming Vintage Austin is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 2008 and historic class (free) road tax valid until March 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
