c. 1988 Elden Formula Renault

Lot details
Registration No: N/A
Chassis No: T.B.A.
Mot Expiry: N/A

Founded in 1961 by John Thompson and the brothers Peter and Brian Hampsheir, Elden have long been involved in the design and fabrication of single seaters. Although perhaps best known for their exploits in Formula Ford during the 1970s, the marque also produced Formula 3, Formula 4, Formula 2000 and Formula Renault chassis and in total have engineered more than thirty-eight individual vehicle designs from the beginning to the present day. Although not the first name normally associated with Formula Renault, Elden has had some success in the series, which was founded in 1971 and has proved highly popular throughout Europe and other countries. Regarded by many as an ideal entry-level way into motor racing, Formula Renault allows drivers to learn advanced race craft before moving on to Formula Three, World Series by Renault, GP2 and perhaps even Formula One.

This example, believed to date from the mid-to-late 1980's, is thought to have been used to compete in the UK Formula Renault series during 1988, 1989 and 1990; the car still bearing its transponder which is numbered `106'. Sporting headlamps, rear mud guards, alloy wheels/road tyres and lighting switch gear to the dashboard, we believe the previous owner to have toyed with the idea of getting the car road registered. Doubtless discovering the impossibility of making the Elden SVA compliant he sold it on to the vendor. Since then, the latter claims not to have used the car except for a brief drive around a garage forecourt. Finished in yellow over contrasting white, the single-seater appears to require some recommissioning and general tidying, but has the potential to make an affordable and highly competitive sprint/hill climb car, or with further development a breath-taking track day car that certainly won't be suitable for the feint hearted!
