Lot details Registration No: L299RTP Chassis No: ZAM336B00RA400021 Mot Expiry: Feb 2008
Taking its name from a previous Maserati great, the new Ghibli was launched in 1992. Last of the Biturbo line, its muscular styling clothed an impressively rigid two-door monocoque bodyshell. Tempered by Koni's freshly developed electronically adjustable hydraulic damping system, its fully independent suspension was allied to four-wheel ventilated disc brakes and power assisted rack and pinion steering. Boasting twin water-cooled IHI turbochargers and dual air-to-air intercoolers, its 'quad-cam' 24-valve V6 engine - available in 2.0 litre or 2.8 litre capacities - was prodigiously powerful (the larger 2790cc version producing some 284bhp and 305lbft of torque). Sumptuously appointed, the Ghibli's cabin came with air-conditioning and electric windows / mirrors / seat recliners as standard. Supercar quick regardless of transmission choice (contemporary road tests mention figures of up to 160mph), it proved highly exclusive. Indeed, according to Maserati archivist Signor Ermanno Cozza, total right-hand drive Ghibli 2.8 litre production amounted to just 133 cars (shared between the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand).
Finished in Sera Blue metallic with light grey leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its 2790cc engine, four-speed automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, paintwork and wheels / tyres (though, he notes that there is a "rust blister on the offside rear wing"). Reportedly "bought new in 1994 by Roger Epsztajn - a marque aficionado and UK Maserati Owners' Club official - who collected it direct from the Modena factory", 'L299 RTP' was featured in a Maserati Club Magazine article describing its journey 'home'. Boasting "climate control, 4-position electronic suspension, Alpine 6-stack CD system and the 'fabled' gold clock", the Ghibli is said to have been "originally serviced by Meridian Maserati then Autoshield of Manchester and subsequently Bill McGrath". Apparently treated to "expenditure in excess of £12,000" over the last three years "including the replacement of both doors / sills and a professional full body respray", recent mechanical work carried out by Bill McGrath is understood to have seen the two-door coupe benefit from "new cambelts, replacement timing chain, alternator, track rod ends, radiator and raised front suspension (the latter giving improved ground clearance) etc". Riding on alloy wheels, this exotic high performance Italian is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until February 2008 and road tax valid until August 31st 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
