More compact and lighter, thanks to unitary-construction bodyshell and, especially when fitted with 3.4-litre motor, much more fun to drive, too, the Mk1 Jaguar saloon caused quite a stir with the post-WW2 performance car starved motoring public when launched in 1956. It was the Mk2, however, that became the definitive sports saloon. For despite having lots of luxurious wood and leather within, the model excelled on racing circuits where it dominated the leader boards of the high profile production saloon events at Silverstone, Goodwood, Oulton Park, Snetterton and Mallory Park.
This Mk2, a 3.4-litre righthand drive saloon which first left the Browns Lane works in 1964, is still an all matching numbers car. From the bills on file detailing work carried out, the three previous owners - the last being Steven Singleton of ABC Pop Group fame who kept the car for seventeen years - spent several thousand pounds on refurbishment.
Above and below, the four-door bodyshell is described as being in A1 condition and the paintwork in Gunmetal Grey as good. The engine bay has been well detailed and the top end of the XK six reconditioned as have the SU carburetors. Both engine and four-speed manual transmission with overdrive are reportedly in good order. The French Blue leather is claimed to be original and the carpets renewed. The 68,743 mileage displayed is claimed by the vendor to be the genuine total for this classic Jag from new.
