Introduced in August 1991, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class (codenamed W140) was a technological tour de force. Renowned for its wonderful build quality and refinement, it boasted such niceties as double pane window glazing and self-closing doors / boot. Based upon a rigid monocoque bodyshell equipped with all round independent suspension (double-wishbone front / multi-link rear), four-wheel disc brakes and power assisted steering, its imposing 'footprint' was belied by excellent road manners. A challenger for the title of 'best car in the world', the Stuttgart manufacturer's flagship could be had in standard saloon, long wheelbase or fixed head coupe guises. Though, many felt that the latter variant was by far the best looking. Electronically limited to 155mph, the S 500 Coupe was powered by a 4973cc DOHC 32-valve V8 engine. Known internally as the M119, this imposing unit was credited with 322bhp and 354lbft of torque. Mated to standard fit automatic transmission, it reputedly enabled the sleek two-door to sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds.
Finished in black with grey leather upholstery, this particular example is rated by the vendor as being in "good" order with regard to its engine, automatic gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Stated to be in "very good original condition both inside and outside", it is believed to have covered 58,300 miles from new (a figure apparently substantiated by "all the old MOT certificates and Mercedes-Benz service history"). Reportedly a "cracking drive" that has been used on "weekends and club events" during the current ownership, this handsome Coupe is offered for sale with "all handbooks / service history", MOT certificate valid until 13th October 2006 and road tax current until September 2006.
