1978 Aston Martin V8

Lot details
Registration No: BLF173S
Chassis No: V8/11806/RCAS
Mot Expiry: Aug 2010

Retrospectively known as the Series 3, the redesigned V8 model which Aston Martin phased-in during July 1973 was a response to valid concerns over forthcoming US emission control regulations. Marking a switch from Bosch fuel-injection to quad 42mm Weber twin-choke carburetion, the newcomer was visually distinguished by an enlarged air intake, elongated bonnet scoop and new rear window base panel. Utilising the same steel platform chassis complete with independent double-wishbone front suspension, a Watts linkage-located de Dion rear axle, power assisted rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes as its predecessor, the luxury GT benefited from improved engine / transmission cooling and a revised petrol tank design (which boosted luggage space). While, other improvements included a revamp of the 2+2 interior with revised seats and reorganised switchgear. Thought to develop some 310bhp, its cleaner-running 5340cc 'quad-cam' engine still made for a prodigiously fast motor car. Indeed, the September 1973 issue of Autocar magazine recorded 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and 146mph flat out aboard a Series 3 Automatic. However, ever tightening emissions regulations saw peak power fall as the decade progressed. By way of response Aston Martin modified the V8 to 'Stage 1' tune in January 1977 fitting new camshafts and a Vantage-type exhaust system which restored output to a creditable 304bhp (cars thus equipped typically carrying a 'S' chassis number suffix).
Finished in Imperial Burgundy with fawn leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, bodywork and paintwork, while he notes that "the original interior trim has no tears". Manufactured on 18th November 1977 and despatched to dealer Williams of Alton Ltd the following April, 'BLF 173S' is understood to have been kept garaged since entering the current (sixth) ownership during 2004. Among the accompanying documentation is a BMIHT certificate and service book stamped by H.W. Motors on 22nd July 1986 at 34,814 miles (the odometer currently shows some 49,000 miles).
