Postwar Rolls-Royce car production kicked of with the R-R Silver Wraith and the Bentley MkVI models. For the first time, standard bodywork was used on the Bentley which had the so called `standard steel' body made by Pressed Steel, the 1949-introduced Silver Dawn being similarly bodied. Both cars featured independent front suspension, hydraulic front brakes and a new 4257cc six-cylinder F-headed engine with inlet over exhaust valve layout.
The current owner tells us that he discovered this Mulliner coachbuilt and righthand drive MkVI in 1996 following many years of barn-storage and, following acquisition, dispatched it straightway to Chelsea Workshops for a complete mechanical overhaul which cost him considerably more than the purchase price!
During his ownership, the lightweight-bodied sports saloon, which has a longer lasting alloy-framework beneath the body panels compared to the ash frame of heavier cars and results in the four doors hanging well, has also been repainted in the current yellow and black, the grey leather overhauled by specialists Connolly and the woodwork refurbished. He tells us that the original 4257cc engine was replaced with the current 4566cc six-cylinder motor, which appeared under MkVI bonnets from mid-1951 and powered R-Type Bentleys from 1952-55.
Chassis, bodywork and paintwork are described as being currently in good condition and leather reasonable. The engine has only recently been rebuilt, the electrical equipment is reportedly good and the four-speed gearbox also in good order. The current MOT certificate is valid until next August.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
