Notable as the last Vauxhall badged car to have been engineered entirely in-house, the Viva HC was introduced at the October 1970 Paris Motor Show. A monocoque design equipped with independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a 'live' rear axle, disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering, it could be had in saloon (two- / four-door), estate or coupe guises. Incorporating such transatlantic styling cues as a flat dashboard, 'strip' rear lights and central bonnet ridge (echoed in the front bumper), the newcomer boasted a larger glasshouse and more cabin room than its HB predecessor. Forming the mainstay of the Viva HC range from September 1973 onwards, the 1256cc OHV four-cylinder engine proved economical and durable in equal measure. Quoted as developing 57bhp and 66lbft of torque, it drove the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. Victim of the 'hatchback' revolution, Viva HC production ended during 1979.
Finished in beige with beige vinyl / cloth upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "very good" (interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) or "as new" (1256cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment) condition. Reportedly kept on static showroom display until 2001, the two-door saloon was first registered in 1992 at which time the DVLA chose to issue it with an age related number plate. Consequently thought to be the "probably the last one registered", it is said to have done just 88 miles from new. A highly unusual opportunity to acquire a Viva HC that has covered "delivery mileage only", 'HKX 445T' is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until January 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
