The vendor of this 1978 450SEL tells us that the Stuttgart-built righthand drive car has not been used in recent months. With only a little recommissioning, however, it is claimed that the 4-door high-spec saloon with 6.9-litre 8-cylinder motor will make a superb vehicle.
The 450SEL was standard issue to all the F1 GP drivers during the 1970s and 1980s when they were given these luxurious Autobahn stormers by the Mercedes-Benz factory (famously, former World Champ James Hunt was forced to store his 450SEL on bricks outside his South London home as he could only afford to fuel his A35 van!).
The mileage displayed when BLH 387S was entered was approximately 128,000 miles and this is believed to be the genuine total mileage. Current condition of bodywork, dark blue paintwork and cream interior is described as good. Engine and 3-speed automatic transmission are said to be in good order, the car starting alright and running well apparently. Clients are also advised that this hugely impressive Merc is being auctioned today entirely without reserve.
PLEASE NOTE: Although this car drove to today's sale, we have now noticed that the battery is flat.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
