Although Yamaha was regarded as two stroke experts until well into the 1970's they had a considerable amount of expertise in four-stroke design having been largely responsible for the design of the Toyota 2000GT sports car engine. Much of this technology was then applied by Yamaha to the development of their first production four stroke engine, the twin cylinder over head cam XS 1, or as it later became known the XS650. When released the machine found favour with lovers of parallel twins, particularly in the States where the model established a strong following. However, by the late seventies sales were starting to slow and the XS twin looked to be approaching the end of production when fashion came to its rescue. The factory custom had become popular and in the XS Yamaha had the ideal machine.
This original UK market custom model finished in maroon is described as being in good condition throughout. It is offered with some bills and a V5.
