Famously launched at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the Jaguar E-Type created a furore. Its combination of supercar performance, superb styling and low price tag was unrivalled. Early sportscar racing success at the hands of Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori amongst others cemented its reputation. Built as a monocoque with a front sub-frame to cradle the engine, its combination of all round independent suspension and disc brakes allied to rack and pinion steering gave it excellent roadholding and handling capabilities. The indomitable XK twin cam supplied abundant power. If the design had an Achilles' heel then it was the recalcitrant Moss gearbox. However, this shortcoming was addressed in 1964 when Jaguar introduced an all-synchromesh four-speeder of its own design together with an enlarged 4,235cc straight-six and revised dashboard layout. With a quoted 265bhp and 283lbft of torque on tap, these updated E-types were reputedly capable of nigh on 150mph and 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds.
Finished in opalescent silver grey with blue leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in very good overall condition. Said to be an "extensively refurbished / rebuilt car with full photographic and financial history", which benefits from "wider wheels, a stainless steel exhaust and immobiliser", it has apparently been "very rarely used". An original right-hand drive roadster (or so the stated chassis number would imply), it is offered for sale with cover and MOT certificate current until 30th June 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
