Lot details Registration No: GNC 440 Chassis No: WEC52 Mot Expiry: March 2005
The 1930-introduced Wraith was the final small-engined new model to be launched by Rolls-Royce before WW2 aero engine work became more of a priority. The Wraith engine's capacity was the same as that employed for the 25/30, though with redesigned crankshaft and larger valves. The Wraith's coil and wishbone independent front suspension came from the big sister Phantom III. Just 491 Wraiths were made, all being very much built by hand.
Offered here is a 1939 Wraith, which was bodied by Manchester coachbuilders Joseph Cockshoot and Company for the 1939 Earls Court Motor Show. GNC 440 has been owned and cared for by a Rolls-Royce enthusiast from 1989, since when the sports saloon has proved to be very reliable, driving well and providing marque-suitable transport for RREC runs as well as weddings duties.
The current state of chassis, cream over brown paintwork, 4237cc 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual gearbox are described as all being in very good order. It is not certain, however, whether the 62,303 miles displayed when the car was entered for the sale is the genuine total mileage for this car from new. Also, the vendor tells us that the car will have freshly MOT tested prior to the sale and prospective owners are advised therefore to check out the test certificate in the history file which may be perused at the Documents Office at Buxton.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
