The MkI Jaguar saloon caused quite a stir in 1956. The much more compact, lighter Jag of unitary construction performed well and yet was no poor relation in terms of internal comfort. Above all, the MkI was fun to drive, even more fun when the 3442cc 3.4 joined the 2483cc 2.4 in 1957.
The narrow rear end could be too skittish, however, especially with the larger XK120 motor. There were calls, too, for improvements to braking and all-round visibility. The Mk2 overcame all such criticisms with its disc brakes, thinner screen and door pillars, greater glass area, and even more potent 3781cc engine option for the Mk2 3.8.
The current owner tells us that this Mk2 3.8, a 1962-built former export model, was converted to righthand drive during a full renovation carried out by a marque specialist. The 4-door saloon bodyshell was completely restored. The 6-cylinder engine was overhauled and fitted with modified cylinder head - the oil pressure is currently said to be excellent apparently - and the 4-speed manual gearbox with preferred overdrive rebuilt. Inside, the woodwork has been repolished, the front leather renewed, the rear seats re-Connollised, and new headlining and sunvisors fitted.
The current condition of the bodyshell is rated by the vendor as excellent, the Ice Blue paintwork also said to be excellent and the interior in grey blue good. The engine is reportedly excellent and the transmission in good order. The tyres have been renewed.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
