One only has to note the rush to buy the last of the Defenders to appreciate the ongoing global affection for the traditional Land Rover that reigned from 1948 to earlier this year. The version most prized by aficionados is the Series I model that accounted for the first 10 years of production. Its simplicity of design is a restorer's dream and, not only do an astonishing percentage of those produced still survive, but most are now far smarter than when they departed the Solihull factory. 'CSO 172' is an example that was restored in 2008. Finished is sparkling Dark green and trimmed in Black it's classed by the vendor as having 'excellent' bodywork and paintwork, 'very good' engine and 'good' interior trim and transmission. It comes complete with canvas truck cab and, rather than the original engine, is these days powered by a more modern 2.5 litre 300TDi diesel unit, minus turbo and intercooler.
