Unveiled in prototype guise at the September 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show (but not entering production until the following August), the Porsche 911 was enthusiastically received by the contemporary motoring press. Based around a steel monocoque bodyshell equipped with all round independent torsion-bar suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes, its distinctive silhouette was the work of Ferdinand 'Butzi' Porsche and Erwin Komenada. Derived from the marque's Type 804 Grand Prix racing programme, the model's rear-mounted 1991cc flat-six engine was allied to five-speed manual transmission. Credited with 130bhp @ 6,100rpm even the very first 911s were reputedly capable of circa 130mph. Lighter and more compact than later incarnations, the O-series cars (built between August 1964 and August 1967) have long been sought after by racers and collectors alike.According to information supplied by the vendor, this particular example was transformed from a road car into a FIA-compliant rally car by Gantspeed Engineering of Lincolnshire. Though, its conversion to right-hand drive UK specification and subsequent maintenance / preparation were reportedly entrusted to XS Racing of Derbyshire. Said to have not only competed in, but won, the 2005 MSA British Historic Rally Championship with Steven Smith at the wheel, `JWE 134C' has the further distinction of having been driven by 1968 Monte Carlo Rally winner, Vic Elford at the Chatsworth Rally Show (Elford of course scored his famous `Monte' victory aboard a similar 911). Reputedly developing some 165bhp, the Porsche's 2-litre rally tuned engine is allied to close-ratio 901-type five-speed manual transmission. Understood to have covered less than 1,000 miles since its flat-six powerplant was last inspected, this competition proven but road legal 911 is offered for sale with various original parts (Solex carburettors, Fuchs wheels), historic class (free) road tax and MOT certificate valid until December 2009.
