With a name that echoed both its XJS donor and Jaguar's 1957 XKSS road-racer (itself a re-invented D-type), the XJSS from Paul Banham Conversions was introduced in 1994. Essentially a re-skin job that discarded the steel bodywork of a standard XJS in favour of radically styled fibreglass panelling, the end product promised considerable performance and economy gains via its lower kerb weight (not to mention increased longevity). Initially available in fully coachbuilt guise only, the XJSS was offered as a kit from 1996 onwards. Well known for his previous work on the Aston Martin V8, Ferrari 400 and Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow amongst others, Banham attracted a number of orders for V12 and straight-six engined cars alike. Though, with their lighter powerplants, firmer suspension and more positive rack and pinion steering, the latter were arguably better suited to the transformation.
Finished in red with cream leather upholstery, this particular example of the XJSS was created at a reputed cost of over £35,000 in 1999. Based on a suitably refurbished 1987 XJS 3.6 donor car equipped with automatic transmission, its 2+2 interior was given a full re-trim as part of the makeover. Believed to have covered a nominal mileage during the intervening six years, it is described by the vendor as being in very good overall condition. Said to "drive like and look like new", it rides on smart OZ alloy wheels and boasts a rear spoiler. Only offered for sale due to its present owner's emigration plans, it comes with a valid MOT certificate until July 2006 and road tax until December 2005.
