Lot details Registration No: 2640 FN Chassis No: 208523DN Mot Expiry: June 2004
It was in 1956 that a new generation of more compact Jaguar saloons came to market, the new car employing unitary-construction for the bodyshell rather than a separate chassis and body. Initially, the Mk1 2.4 Jag was powered by a 2483cc six, a short-stroke version of the Coventry firm's already world famous XK power unit. Here was a much more compact and lighter Jaguar from William Lyons and his Coventry team that performed well and yet was no poor relation in terms of the level of internal comfort provided. Above all, the new Jags were fun to drive.
This Mk2 - with thinner pillars, wider rear track - was subject to a total rebuild in 1998. The 3.8-litre engine, now modified we are told to rev to 7500rpm, has been balanced and now has large valve cylinder head, alloy pistons, 2in carbs and stainless steel exhaust. There are twin petrol tanks and a Monza-type fuel filler cap like a Coombs Jag in period. The steering is power-assisted and the manual gearbox is an all-synchromesh unit. Carbon fibre brake pads and wider competition-spec wire wheels have been used.
Current condition of 4-door saloon bodyshell is rated by the entrant as being 100 per cent, Jaguar dark blue paintwork 95 per cent, and beige interior as well as both 6-cylinder motor and 4-speed transmission all claimed to be 100 per cent too.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
