The Jaguar XK120 caused a sensation when it first appeared at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show. Such was the demand for the new model that the early ash-framed and aluminium-panelled clad bodywork had to be re-engineered in more volume-production practical steel.
Having been made at the Coventry firm's scheduled to be closed Browns Lane factory in 1951, this XK120 is a very early example as can be seen from the 660767 chassis number and the external chrome sidelights. A UK market car with right-hand drive steering, the two-door roadster is also still in the original, though repainted, red as part of a ground-up restoration said to have cost circa £70,000. Since then, it had only been driven 146 miles when entered for this sale, the underside being particularly sharp.
Amongst work carried out, the dashboard has been recovered in red leather and the interior given a retrim, again in red leather, though with biscuit beige inserts. The red carpets have also been renewed as have the sidescreens. When started up, the 3.4-litre six-cylinder XK engine reportedly sounded beautiful. Originally on steel road wheels, the car now sits on far more desirable wires and the dynamo has been changed for an alternator.
This really super 120, which has been wax-oiled and comes with a Carcoon, is being auctioned today, very reluctantly, due an impending house move. The history file contains a full photographic record of the rebuild and a Heritage Certificate confirming the manufacturing and original supply details. The latest MOT certificate with the car will be valid until June.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
