Few, if any other names in motorcycling history, can claim to know the value of competition in any sphere of motor sport than that of Norton. Founder James L. Norton was obviously aware of this from the day he founded the firm in 1901, and after his death in 1925 Norton Motors continued this sound engineering and business philosophy in the hands of his successors William Moore, Arthur Carrol and Joe Craig. Fortunately J.L.Norton was to enjoy many of the successes his motorcycles achieved , the greatest so far at that time being the I.O.M. Senior Tourist Trophy and the Sidecar T.T. the year before his untimely death at only 56. Engines of Swiss Moto-Reve manufacture and from France's Peugeot company were installed in the first Norton models, but before long power units of 348, 490, 596 and 633 cubic capacity in side valve, overhead valve and overhead camshaft form were designed and produced in house and the company continued to manufacture a similar range for many years to come. This sporting image was to endure right up to the present day and the evocative Norton name, the most successful British one ever in road racing, is still associated with sporting machines which can be purchased new more than a century later.
FM 4576 is a fine early example of one of the most successful models, produced just after the founder's demise in 1926. It is reported by the owner to have been restored by Norton specialist Dr George Cohen using original parts and a letter from him confirming it's originality is with other documents which include expired MOT from June 2011 and DVLA V5 registration plus SORN details. In excellent order, finished in silver, stated to be 'ready to go' and entered all good this Norton should prove to be a worthy mount for a new owner.
