This really well replicated Lotus XI, based on a 1957 vintage Lotus Engineering Series 2 sports-racer, was constructed from scratch during the 1980s by Malcolm Linder. The body has been finished in green, traditional to period Lotus competition cars, whilst the power unit is a Kawasaki ZZR 1100 four-cylinder (capable of producing 150bhp at 10,000rpm and resulting in impressive performance in a machine weighing only 500kg), while the sequential-type gearbox has six forward ratios.
Intended for MSA Speed Event participation, the right-hand drive sports car has no speedo and is not road registered. During 2004, it was much enjoyed at Track Days as well as at Sprints and Hill Climbs. The vendor tells us that his season did not amount to more than 500 entertaining miles, taking the overall total for both engine and transmission only to around 7000 miles.
Currently, the authentic looking space frame chassis, made from 18 gauge treated ERW tubing, the bodywork, consisting of aluminium tub with front and rear sections in glassfibre, as well as the paintwork and the minimalist interior, are all said by him to be in good condition, with mechanical and electrical items reportedly in good order.
Rear suspension, as on an original Eleven, has four-link trailing arm suspension with Austin-Healey Sprite 3.7:1 axle located by Panhard Rod, all manufactured out of CDS2 treated tube. Front wishbone suspension is to a design employed on both the Seven and Elite. Braking is by Triumph discs at the front and Alfin-finned Sprite drums at the rear. Extremely rapid too.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
