When Bob Currie tested an example of the newly introduced D14/4 version of the Bantam in 1968 for "The Motor Cycle" he was favourably impressed with the performance offered by the up rated engine finding that it would cruise comfortably at an indicated 60 mph and "running before the wind, it was possible to show slightly better than 70 mph on the dial at times". The increase in performance had been achieved by raising the primary compression ratio thanks to thicker flywheels, revised ports and cylinder head and an increase in the diameter of the exhaust pipe to 1 5/8 inch from the 1 ¼ inch previously employed. This resulted in a claimed power output of 13 bhp at 5,750 rpm although the increase in performance did come at the cost in terms of flexibility when compared to its predecessors.
This example has formed part of a private collection and is presented to a good standard throughout.
