The most prestigious marque in the Rootes Empire, Humber launched its first mid-sized saloon in 1963. Intended to compete with the likes of the Ford Corsair, Triumph 2000 and Rover P6, its wraparound windscreen, quad headlamps and prominent grille lent it a distinctive air. Built around a monocoque chassis equipped with independent coil-over front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes, it was powered by a 1592cc four-cylinder ohv engine allied to four-speed plus overdrive manual transmission. Boasting a well-appointed cabin and sporty performance, it proved a strong sales success with some 17,011 finding new homes before the arrival of the re-styled MKII in late 1965.
Finished in blue with blue upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in sound (bodywork), fair (interior trim), fair-to-good (electrical equipment, chassis, paintwork) or good (engine, transmission, wheels / tyres) condition. Reportedly fitted with various reconditioned parts including "generator, starter, control box, solenoid, front / rear brakes, wiper motor, Weber carburettor etc", it is also said to have had its "tyres, door / boot seals, plugs and leads" replaced. Further benefiting from an overhauled overdrive unit, it is believed but not warranted to have covered 66,000 miles from new. An increasingly scarce sight on today's roads, this stylish Humber is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until August 31st 2006, historic class (free) road tax until August 31st 2006 and a good quantity of spare parts which can be collected by the successful purchaser from the seller's nearby Peak Dale, Buxton home (cylinder head, gearbox, steering column, brake servo, callipers / pads, starter, dynamo, timing chain etc).
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
