The Minx moniker was applied to numerous Hillmans between 1932 and 1970. However, the last version to be introduced before the outbreak of World War Two differed significantly from its earlier siblings. The first Minx to utilize monocoque construction, the 1939 car also boasted improvements to its four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox, differential, half shafts and steering box. Even its waterfall-style radiator grille which bore a superficial resemblance to the 1938 car became a pressed alloy component rather than a composite. Powered by Hillman's redoubtable 1185cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine, the newcomer proved so rugged and reliable that it saw service as a light staff car during the early years of World War Two. Reintroduced with the advent of peace, the Hillman Minx Phase I still featured a beam front axle, all-round leaf-sprung suspension and Bendix drum brakes. Available in saloon, drophead coupe and estate guises, it was superseded by the Phase II during 1947.
Finished in white with red upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good overall" condition. Stated to have had "just three keepers from new" and to have been in the possession of its "previous owner for twenty-seven years", the Hillman was reportedly treated to "a thorough engine overhaul only a few years ago". Said to "run and drive very well", the four-seater is further understood to pleasingly retain its "original red leather interior". Recently serviced and in possession of a fresh MOT certificate, this charming Hillman Minx Phase I is worthy of close inspection.
