Lot details Registration No: VIB1911 Chassis No: 9112300376 Mot Expiry: June 2010
The so-called E-programme cars introduced for the 1972 model-year remain among the most sought after Porsche 911 variants yet made. Although, sharing the same newly enlarged 2341cc engine capacity as its `T' and `E' siblings, the range topping `S' boasted a higher compression ratio and freer breathing cylinder heads. Developing an impressive 190bhp and 216Nm, it could be had with a choice of five-speed manual (Type 915) or Sportmatic transmission. Though, those who opted to shift cogs for themselves were rewarded with the faster, more involving drive (contemporary road tests spoke of 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds and 144mph). All E-programme 911s benefited from revised rear suspension mountings which helped quell compound strut movement and so improved roadholding over imperfect road surfaces but only the flagship model came with Koni shock absorbers and Fuchs alloy wheels as standard. Further distinguished by a chin spoiler that apparently cut high-speed lift by forty percent (optional on the `T' and `E'), the E-programme `S' is thought to have accounted for some 2,739 sales worldwide (1,750 Coupes and 989 Targas). Scarcely heavier than a RS 2.7 Touring (M472), and only 20bhp down, it remained something of a well-kept secret among the Porsche cognoscenti for years.
Finished in silver with black cloth upholstery this particular right-hand drive example is said to have enjoyed an extensive refurbishment of its bodywork and interior trim when purchased by the current owner in 2000. The Porsche has reportedly remained in use every year since and is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Complete with appropriate registration `VIBI 911', this handsome E-programme `S' model is the epitome of the classic 911, good examples of which are increasingly sought after by collectors the world over.
