Lot details Registration No: TYJ 682 Chassis No: 876408 Mot Expiry: Feb 2005
According to the Production Record Trace Certificate prepared for the owner by Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, this E-Type was manufactured 20 December 1961, the open left-hand drive car painted in Opalescent Gunmetal Grey being despatched to the original dealer, Jaguar Cars of New York, for first owner W J Weiss of Mercer Island, Washington for first registration in early 1962.
Chassis number 876408 was completely rebuilt for the present owner in May 1995. The bodywork - authentically reproduced to the current lightweight fixed head coupe in aluminium except for the centre section/bulkhead - is painted in Ecurie Ecosse metallic dark blue.
The car has been maintained by leading historic racing car specialists Denis Welch and the 3.8-litre engine last completely rebuilt in spring 2004, since when it has only been raced twice. The specification is really comprehensive, consisting as it does of four-speed synchromesh gearbox, differential with anti-squat modification, special radiator with cockpit warning light, 120-litres capacity fuel tank, heated front screen and high intensity headlights. The wheels are 15ins diameter lightweight alloys in original style shod with raceworthy tyres, there being three sets of tyres included in all - L, M and ZZ Avon.
Among the results achieved by car and driver have been 1st in class and 5th overall 2000 FIA Monza, 8th overall 2000 Eifel Klassik, 2nd overall behind a Le Mans Mk 1 Lola 2001 Snetterton One Hour, 6th overall 2001 Eifel Klassik and 3rd overall 2002 Snetterton One Hour. The fastest lap times recorded also make impressive reading. Consider lapping the long Nurburgring circuit (during the Eifel Klassik) in 10 minutes 57 seconds, Zandvoort 2 minutes 6.57 seconds, Spa Franchorchamps 2 minutes 55.62 seconds, Donington 1 minute 23.77 seconds and Snetterton 1 minute 22.744 seconds.
Ready to race again, the car has a set of FIA papers for GTS12 category issued 1 June 1997, a current V5C registration document confirming TYJ 682 registration and the latest MOT certificate, which, though actually expiring today, should be easily renewed judging by the fine cosmetic and mechanical condition of the vehicle, and an historic vehicle tax disc. Ownership and history details are also well documented.
We are told by the owner that a spare five-speed gearbox, a spare set of alloy wheels and the extra competition tyres mentioned as well as another bonnet, which would be ideal for rallies, will be made available to a successful bidder. By arrangement with Jeremy Welch and at a new owner's expense, these items may be collected from the premises of Denis Welch Limited at Yoxall in Staffordshire.
Having finished in front of CUT 7 in four out of five confrontations and with continuous competition history logged since 1995 - including taking part in HSCC Championship, Gentleman Drivers, Top Hat Cloth Cap and FIA round races as well as successful runs in the Eifel Klassik and the Spa 6 Hours - this is clearly another very special E Type, which is only being auctioned today due to the owner's ill health. Competition E Types do not come much better than this.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
