Lot details Registration No: BNF 52B Chassis No: 4Y832159497 Mot Expiry: July 2007
Nicknamed the 'Flair Bird' on account of its bold yet elegant new styling, the fourth generation Thunderbird was introduced for the 1964 model year. True to its brief as Ford's 'personal luxury car', the imposing two-door boasted a spacious and well-equipped interior full of labour-saving gizmos. Based around a monocoque chassis fitted with coil-and-wishbone independent front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and four-wheel power drum brakes, the 'Flair Bird' could be had in hardtop coupe, landau or convertible guises. Typically allied to three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, its 390ci (6.4litre) OHV V8 was credited with 300hp. Reputedly capable of 120mph, the Hardtop Coupe was by far the most popular variant. Priced at a not insubstantial $4,486, it comfortably outsold rivals such as the Buick Riviera and Pontiac Grand Prix.
Finished in Golden Sand Yellow with green / gold tex upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being "superb". Reported to have had only "one previous owner (lady)", it is further said to have undergone a "five year restoration programme" since entering the current ownership in 1992. Believed but not warranted to have covered 85,349 miles from new, 'BHF 52B' is offered for sale with rebuild photographs and a MOT certificate valid until July 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
