Lot details Registration No: K874FAU Chassis No: SAJJFALD7AJ667306 Mot Expiry: June 2011
Following numerous delays, the all new XJ6 (or XJ40 to use its code name) was finally launched in October 1986 as a replacement for Jaguar's ageing Series III cars. More evolutionary than revolutionary, it boasted all-round independent suspension, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and generous levels of sound deadening. It proved to be a credible alternative to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-series and was well received by the contemporary UK motoring press. The newcomer was initially available with a choice of two variants of the straight-six AJ6 powerplant - the 2.9-litre SOHC unit (a derivative of Jaguar's legendary V12) or the 3.6-litre DOHC engine. The former produced 165 bhp and 176 lb ft of torque and the latter gave 221 bhp and 248 lb ft of torque. Allied to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic 'J-gate' transmission, they allowed purchasers to prioritise performance over economy and vice-versa. By 1989, Jaguar had been bought by Ford who changed the engine offerings to a 3.2-litre DOHC unit or a 4.0-litre DOHC one. They also replaced the often unreliable digital dashboard with conventional analogue instruments.
The example offered is a 1992 XJ6 4.0. Apparently the Jaguar was delivered new to a Mr D Barlow (the owner of a Derbyshire haulage company) by Paramount Cars Ltd. It was subsequently serviced by a combination of Paramount, the owner's own business and Dove Garage of Ashbourne. In 2000, we understand the car's ownership was transferred to Dove Garage (apparently for insurance purposes). The vendor acquired it last year. The recorded mileage of just under 42,000 is believed to be genuine and the Jaguar is relatively unusual in being fitted with the optional manual 5-speed Getrag gearbox. 'K874 FAU' is finished in Regency Red and trimmed in Doeskin leather. According to the vendor, both the coachwork and paintwork are "excellent apart from the front wings and door trims", while the engine, transmission and interior trim she describes as "A1". The electrics are said to be "excellent, apart from the central locking, which is not working". The Jaguar is taxed until the end of this year and MOT'd into June 2011.
