Styled by American Tony Lapine, Porsche's front-engined, water-cooled, V8-powered 2+2 928 was launched at the 1977 Geneva Salon. In addition to being about as mechanically different to the ubiquitous 911 as possible, the newcomer represented the company's first foray into grand touring territory. Nevertheless it received a rapturous reception from the press and was duly awarded the 1978 Car of The Year Award. Production continued until 1995, by which time some 61,000 examples had been made. At launch, the all-alloy engine was 4474cc in capacity and produced some 240bhp. The S derivative introduced in 1979 featured an enlarged unit of 4664cc and a commensurate increase in performance - the 0-60mph dash was now possible in 6.2 seconds and the top speed electronically limited to 155mph.
The Porsche on offer is a right-hand drive 928S equipped with automatic transmission. The vendor has only owned the car for 18 months but tells us he has "thoroughly enjoyed it" and in the last 3000 miles it has reportedly been treated to new brake discs, pads, drive plate, tie rods, wheel bearings and timing belt at a cost of £4,500. He currently views 'C561 CTP' as being "in sound order, just in need of a few aesthetic touch-ups". It comes with an MOT valid into March 2013.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
