Launched way back in 1964, the evergreen 911 was constantly modified and uprated so that it was built in Porsche's Stuttgart works and then sold all over the world for more than thirty years. The mechanical layout of the 911 was very similar to that already seen on the preceding Porsche 356 four-cylinder model with air-cooled six-cylinder engine at the back and torsion bar springing, Macpherson struts fitted to the front and trailing arms at the rear. The early 1991cc air-cooled six produced 130bhp and the five-speed gearbox from the 904 racer was employed.
A Targa-top 911, additional to the coupe version, was also offered, initially with zip-out rear window, though soon with fixed glass rear window, as was a four-cylinder 1582cc 912 with the same unitary-construction bodyshell. Further evolutionary upgrades took place from time to time, for along with a lengthened-wheelbase, a fuel-injected 2.2-litre capacity six engine being fitted in the tail of all 911s from 1968 and a 2.4-litre motor from the 1971 model year.
Having spent the last year safely tucked up in a heated showroom, this 1973-built 911 2.4, a left-hand drive targa coupe, is in excellent condition, both inside and out, says the entrant, and drives very well, too, he says. The two-door shell and body panels, which are painted, the alloys and blue leather interior, the 2.4 motor and five-speed manual transmission as well as the electrics are all reportedly good. There is, of course, no other classic quite like a 911, insist Porschaholics. They come highly recommended.
