The Fulvia, launched at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show was designed by Antonio Fessia to replace the Lancia Appia, moving to front-wheel drive like the larger Flavia, but using a narrow-angle V4 engine mounted longitudinally in front of its transaxle. Front independent suspension used wishbones and a single leaf spring, while a beam axle with a Panhard rod and leaf springs was used at the back, with four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes. Exquisitely engineered, the new compact saloon belied its small capacity, originally just 1091 or 1216cc, with phenomenal roadholding and exemplary handling. On testing it in 1967, Road & Track summed up the Fulvia as `a precision motorcar, an engineering tour de force'. Soon the boxy saloon was joined by a neat and chic coupe, but the most special versions were the Zagato-designed and made Sports, the earliest cars having aluminium bodyshells. Though, all variants are fitted with a rear window that slightly retracts so as to aid cabin ventilation.
New for 1967, the 1298cc engine as fitted to this particular left-hand drive example was credited with developing some 87bhp @ 6,000rpm; an output which reputedly enabled the wind-cheating coupe to reach 109mph. As a first series car it also carries the four-speed manual gearbox. Finished in white with black upholstery, the Lancia is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment and paintwork. While, he rates the bodywork as "original and mint" and the interior trim as "superb". Reportedly "a former Neapolitan museum exhibit" that has covered "just 9,900 miles from new", the Fulvia is further understood to have benefited from an extensive engine overhaul. Worthy of close inspection, this jewel-like coupe is summed up the seller as "one of a kind".
