"It's easy to see why the Triumph Stag should be such a sought after classic. A bad one may indeed be a truly horrible experience, but get behind the wheel of a good one and it's bliss, sheer bliss!" (Your Classic magazine June 1991).
Fruit of Giovanni Michelotti's long association with Triumph, the Stag was launched in 1970. A handsome four-seater convertible, it featured all round independent coil-sprung suspension, power assisted rack and pinion steering and disc/drum brakes. Conceived as a rival to products from Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Alfa Romeo and Lancia, it was well received by the contemporary press. Powered by a 3-litre V8 engine mated to either four-speed manual or automatic transmission, it proved to be a fast and very capable grand tourer.
Finished in white with black vinyl upholstery, this particular example is variously rated by the vendor as being in good (automatic gearbox, paintwork, alloy wheels / tyres) or excellent (engine, chassis, interior trim, bodywork) order. Though, he notes that there is "slight corrosion to the rear offside wheelarch where a mud flap would fit". Reputed to have undergone some restoration work prior to 1989 when it was acquired by its previous keeper (as evidenced by traces of red oxide paint and copious amounts of waxoyl), it is said to be accompanied by "MOT certificates from 1986 to date (excluding 1987, 1993 and 1999) showing the mileage going from 39,160 to the current 44,610". Although, this "genuine, honest car" has apparently covered just 1,055 miles since entering the current ownership in April 2002, it has nevertheless been treated to: inertia rear seat belts, a Kenlowe cooling fan, original equipment chrome door mirrors, upgraded stainless steel brake master cylinder, replacement flexible front brake hoses and a spin-off oil filter conversion kit. Further benefiting from "an immaculate soft-top / frame, piranha electronic ignition, good condition hardtop and a sigma alarm system (which can be set with the roof down)", it is offered for sale with history file, MOT certificate valid until October 1st 2006 and road tax until 30th November 2005.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
