Phelon & Moore of Cleackheaton were among the pioneers of all chain drive employing from it 1902 as a way of providing reliable drive, consequently, they were also at the forefront of the introduction of reliable variable gears whilst their use of the sloping engine as part of the frame structure continued throughout their long history.
These factors undoubtedly contributed to the choice of their machines for sidecar use in the pioneer period and we are delighted to be able to offer this original 3 1/2hp combination.
It was once owned by Mr F Millar of the motorcycle dealers Millars Motors (Mitcham) Ltd. and was regularly used by him until the late sixties. In 1966 it was featured on Sunbeam MCC 30th Pioneer Run advertising posters, coincidentally also being Panther, as Phelon & Moore were then known, last year of production. The outfit has been a regular entrant on the Pioneer Run over many years and has a very early Pioneer Certificate, number 63,that was issued to Mr F Millar in 1961.
The combination retains its original registration number and is equipped with an unusual and rare castor wheel chassis and Montgomery sidecar built under Mills and Fulford and Turner patents. The outfit is pictured in "The Sidecar History" by Geoff Brazendale on page 13. A Binks carburettor and Bosch magneto provide the mixture and spark and a period Jos V Jones of New York, USA 60 mph speedometer will help the outfits rider picking up a ticket between Epsom and Madeira Drive. Other fittings include a Bluemels foot-pump mounted on the fuel tank top frame and a full Lucas acetylene lighting set.
The outfit is described by the vendor as being in good condition throughout with its original 1913 paintwork.
