"The moment I drove the NSX, all the benchmark cars - Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini - I had been using as references in the development of my car vanished from my mind. Of course the car we would create, the McLaren F1, needed to be faster than the NSX, but the NSX's ride quality and handling would become our new design target" (Gordon Murray, McLaren F1 designer).
Unveiled at the February 1989 Chicago Auto Show the Honda NSX was the brainchild of Ken Okuyama and Shigeru Uehara. The world's first production car to be based around an aluminium monocoque, the newcomer also made use of aluminium for its all-round double-wishbone independent suspension. Dynamically honed by Satoru Nakajima, Bobby Rahal and most famously, Ayrton Senna, the NSX was initially assembled at the purpose-built Takanezawa R&D Plant in Tochigi (though, production switched to Suzuka from mid 2004 onwards). Powered by a mid-mounted 3-litre V6 engine allied to five-speed manual transmission, the two-seater was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds and 159mph. Marketed as an 'Everyday Supercar', the NSX soon established itself as the class benchmark for usability, reliability and quality. A vastly underrated machine when new, the Honda has nevertheless become something of a cult classic thanks to a GT2 class win at the 1995 Le Mans 24-hours (8th overall) not to mention appearances in films such as 'Pulp Fiction' and computer games like 'Gran Turismo 4'.
Finished in red with black leather upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (engine, five-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim) or "very good" (bodywork, paintwork) condition. While, he adds that 'K92 TLB' was "imported from Japan by a Japanese 3-Day Event Rider for his personal use". Riding on later type alloy wheels, the NSX also boasts "a stacker CD, stainless steel quad-pipe sports exhaust and air-conditioning". Reportedly the subject of a "recent cambelt change and service at a Honda dealer", this nicely presented supercar is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until March 2009.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
