Arguably the most successful and longest running sports racing car of all time has been the Porsche 956/962 family which was enlarged by a number of 956/962 model derivatives produced by constructor/entrants who had been longterm Porsche race car customers. Even in its first year on the track, the 956 won at Le Mans and repeated the achievement a further six times at the world's most famous sportscar race. After just six years in competition, these German supercars had won 162 of the 200 international races they had started..
This most authentic looking 1982 956 was factory-built for shows, the extremely valuable Ickx/Bell Rothmans Le Mans winning original being in the Porsche museum. This display version has an aluminium-clad steel frame to recreate the appearance of the original monocoque tub construction, whilst the bodywork would appear to be made from carbon-fibre of some kind (possibly original, the vendor suggests) and there is even a heated screen just like the real thing.
The cockpit is kitted out with model-correct seat, harness, full instrumentation and steering wheel, the car steering correctly to enable it to be moved around a showroom or exhibition, but having no pedals or brakes. Current cosmetic condition, though not great, is nonetheless described as good. Apart from becoming a talking point exhibit in any motor sporting showroom, foyer or nightclub bar, it would, of course, gild any serious Porsche collection or make a sensational centrepiece for any Big Boy's toy cupboard or playroom.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
