The dominant force in 500cc Grand Prix racing between 1976 and 1982, Suzuki's various XR designated RG500 Works racers were crushingly effective. Winning the Manufacturer's Championship an amazing seven times in a row, their only serious opposition seemed to come from the Yamaha mounted Kenny Roberts. Made available to a select few only, the customer versions (labelled as the MK series) of the pure-blood factory machines were highly sought after. Launched in 1980, the 'over-the-counter' RG500 MK5 was a technological marvel. Boasting no fewer than four crankshafts (all geared into a single primary cog) and special Mikuni flat-slide carburettors (to keep the height down), its water-cooled four-cylinder engine was a paragon of two-stroke design. Developing some 110bhp @ 11,000rpm (over 220bhp per litre), it endowed the lithe (143kg dry weight) MK5 with prodigious performance.
Finished in blue over white, this particular example is said to have been restored to original specification. Sporting replacement crankcase covers (hence the lack of a visible engine number), it also wears a Brembo front brake master cylinder and callipers.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
