It was in 1956 that Jaguar brought out a brand new generation of smaller sporting saloons, no longer with separate chassis and bodies, but employing much more modern unitary construction body shells. The first model in a long line was fitted with a 2.4-litre six-cylinder engine based on the legendary XK120 motor, which powered both the legendary XK120 of 1951-1955 and the newly launched XK140 replacement, though with shorter stroke. Very soon, the 2.4 Mk1 saloon was joined by a 3.4 version, and then the restyled and disc-braked Mk2 came to market.
With wider rear track, much thinner roof pillars and greater glass area vastly improving all-round visibility, and 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8-litre engine options, the Mk2 quickly became the definitive sports saloon of the 1960s. Apart from clocking up numerous successes on the race track at the weekends, the Mk2 became the road car choice of the discerning motorist not to mention being the preferred wheels for both cops and the villains they pursued in movies of the day.
Included with this 1961 Coventry built Mk2 3.8 right-hand drive saloon on steels are various photos showing what is claimed to have been a professionally executed refurbishment by a garage. The vendor tells us that the sports saloon has since done little mileage since this restoration. Currently, the four-door bodywork is claimed to be good as is the maroon paintwork with black vinyl roof (Inspector Morse combination), while the original red leather interior is in fair condition. The 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine and the four-speed manual gearbox with the benefit of overdrive are both reportedly in good order.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
