Lola has been at the forefront of building 'customer' race cars since 1958, and later came to more prominence with its attempt on the 1963 Le Mans 24 hours with the Mk6, the forerunner of the GT40. Since then, its F3000 and Indy / CART single-seaters have been front-runners many years over, notably taking Nigel Mansell to his CART championship in 1993. Later in 1996, F3000 became a one-make series and Lola was contracted to build all the cars, an arrangement that lasted until 2005 when F3000 was replaced by GP2.
This particular F3000 car was originally raced during the 1991-'92 seasons for the Stella International team, powered at the time by a Cosworth-Mugen V8 and driven by Hitoshi Owaga. As a display car, it is in fine order cosmetically, and retains its important components such as suspension, brakes, pedal box, exhaust, instruments and electrics, all described by the vendor as "beautiful" or "nigh on perfect", but there is no engine and the transmission casing is empty of gears - partly as these components are expensive and can be put to good use elsewhere, and partly to save weight. It has currently been earning its keep in promotional use - hence the iconic Malboro McLaren livery - and, the vendor says, is a great revenue earner or museum piece: "Or return it to the track".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
