1986 Mercedes-Benz 420 SEC Coupe

Lot details
Registration No: C26 BEL
Chassis No: WDB1260462A224973
Mot Expiry: May 2010

As the successor to the W116 range, the W126 Series was the second generation of flagship vehicles to bear the S-Class name, which stood for `sonderklasse' or, in English, `special class'. The initial saloon versions were launched in 1979, with the first 2-door Coupe (C126) variants, the 280SEC and 500SEC, becoming available two years later. The 420SEC was introduced at the September 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, as a replacement for the 380. Based around the same two-door monocoque bodyshell as its 500SEC and 560SEC siblings, it was equipped with all-round independent suspension (coil-and wishbone front/semi-trailing arm rear), four-wheel disc brakes and power assisted steering. Allied to four-speed automatic transmission as standard, its new 4196cc SOHC V8 engine was credited with 231bhp and 240lbft of torque. Making the most of its 0.34 drag coefficient, the luxury express was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 8.2 seconds and 138mph. It is by far the rarest Coupe variant, with just 3,680 420SECs thought to have been made between 1986 and 1991.

The righthand drive 420 SEC being offered left the production line in 1986. It is equipped with automatic transmission and finished in blue with blue velour trim. The specification includes air conditioning and electric seats and even a Mercedes `concealed retractable' tow bar. A recent inspection and major service carried out by Caffyns Mercedes of Dorchester apparently confirms this to be "a very original and well cared for example", which comes complete with: "the original keys and booklets, Mercedes first aid kit, complete and original tool kit, original sales brochure, 21 service stamps, its last 10 MOT's and every service invoice since the car was new". In addition to the recent service, the big Merc has been treated to four brand new alloy wheels and Michelin tyres. The information provided would suggest the recorded mileage of 87,000 to be correct. With the above in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising that the vendor describes the coachwork and paintwork as "immaculate", the trim as "as new" and the engine and transmission as "excellent". He also believes the car to be "rust free". Built to last and luxurious in the extreme, these Mercedes now represent phenomenal value for money.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT until May 2010.
