The original SL, being an abbreviation of Sport Leicht, was largely engineered by the celebrated Daimler Benz engineer, Rudi Uhlenhaut, and was developed from and directly related to one of the world's most revered motor cars, the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing of 1957. Discerning long distance motorists from all over the world wanted an SL of their own and the Stuttgart manufacturer has been obliging them ever since. Indeed, whenever M-B bring out a new SL roadster, you can also be sure that the model range is going to be around for a very long time.
This 280SL, a right-hand drive two-door with factory-fitted rear seat and genuine pull-out Blaupunkt Blue Spot radio, first left the German factory in 1981. The classic drophead has had all previous keepers, including one titled lady owner, listed in the service booklet together with their dates of ownership. SUD 816X comes with full history, too, plus all MOTs, the latest certificate being current until July.
The shell, body panels, cream paintwork, interior in blue cloth and vinyl as well as 2746cc capacity six-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission are described by the entrant as being in very good condition. We further understand that the bands were replaced within the four-speed automatic transmission in July 2002. The 105,000 mileage displayed when entered for the sale is believed by the owner to be the correct total for the car from new. Included, too, are all handbooks and documents in the folder as supplied by Mercedes when the car was new.
