Founded in 1973 by Bianchi, Morri and Tamburini, Bimota (Bi-Mo-Ta) began its career as a motorcycle manufacturer by creating a series of fabulous racers. Engineered by the mercurial Tamburini they typically married exquisite, hand-crafted chassis frames to the latest in Japanese engine technology. Often enjoying a considerable handling advantage over their rivals, they were assembled using the very best Italian specialist components available. Enjoying success on a national level for several years, it was not until 1980 that Bimota secured its first major title. Winner of that year's 350cc World Championship (beating the similarly powered Yamaha TZ350s in the process), it proceeded to claim an endurance crown with Charlie Williams and the 1987 Formula 1 title thanks to some inspired riding from Virginio Ferrari.
An exact contemporary of Ferrari's Yamaha FZ750 powered YB4, this Yamaha FZR 600cc engined JB9 racer was campaigned by the Jallo Tamoil team whose red, white and blue colours it still wears. Ridden by Roberto Panichi and Michaele Malatesta, this fearsome machine's specification also includes Marchesini wheels, Paioil forks and Brembo brakes.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
